The Citadel

Name: The Citadel
Author : Andrea Rosa
Submitted / Updated: 04-30-2007 / 04-30-2007 (Planet Quake)
Category  Maps: Single Player add-on

Description: Citadel doesn’t necessarily require Knightmare or other custom engines. All you need is Quake II patched to version 3.20. Instructions on how to install and play the game are in readme.htm.

All monsters have enhanced pathfinding and AI (thanks to the Rogue, Xatrix and Lazarus code packed in Knightmare’s DLL) Gunners, for example, use the correct elevation angle to fire grenades, while Tanks and Iron Maidens have the bad habit to fire rockets at your last known position. The Berserk’s spike attack has a slightly longer range, which is enough to catch unprepared those who have only played the original Quake II. The Hornet (flying boss) is now able to fire rockets in multiple directions.

Unlike the original Quake II, certain bosses do not explode when you kill them, and they may hinder your way with their extra-large bodies: in these cases you may have to gib them, possibly using your handy Chainfist to not waste precious ammo.

Ammo Packs don’t contain the new military supplies: though increasing your carrying capacity for all ammo types except Disruptors, they only contain classic Q2 munitions. However, they allow to stock many more Bullets (500 instead of 300).

Some of the new weapons have been fine-tuned: the Chainfist deals more damage than in Ground Zero, thus allowing for some effective melee combat, while the ETF Rifle fires at a faster rate and causes tangible splash damage. Also the Plasma Beam was slightly enhanced, making the consumption of cells a bit more rewarding. However, the biggest changes apply to the Disintegrator, which is now a truly powerful weapon but holds a very limited number of Disruptors.

Commentary: Unofficial and great add-on with very good designed levels wich you will enjoy for hours. The most important differences added, as you can see in description, are the enemie's AI and their weapons; and some recorded animations that you will see at the end of the game. Highly recommended.

  1. Hello, I'm the author of this levelpack. For those who are interested, I've updated Citadel: the new version contains nine maps (eight regular levels and a secret level), and gameplay has been enhanced.
